27/11/2007 The HIV epidemic through the eyes of Dutch photographer Adriaan Backer
World AIDS Day is observed on 1 December each year. This year, the Dutch non-governmental humanitarian organisation AIDS Foundation East-West (AFEW), in partnership with PRAKTIKA Theatre, CINE FANTOM Club and the KINOTEATR.DOC project, with support from the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Moscow, is organising an event with the well-known Dutch photojournalist Adriaan Backer. Through his work, Adriaan addresses one of the most pressing global issues – HIV/AIDS. His reports from various countries show the lives of vulnerable groups and how they are affected by HIV, including injecting drug users, sex workers, prisoners and people living with HIV and TB.
This World AIDS Day event in Moscow will include the screening of a documentary by BNN TV Channel, ‘WARZONE: Snapshots of a Creeping Killer’, a film about the HIV/AIDS epidemics in Johannesburg and Capetown, South Africa. As part of the STOP AIDS NOW campaign, journalists accompanied Adriaan Backer on his trip to South Africa, documented in the film. During the event in PRAKTIKA Theatre, Adriaan’s photos will be featured, illustrating the stories of people from Eastern Europe and Central Asia (Moldova, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan).
Masha Gessen, a prominent journalist and writer, will host the event.

26/11/2007 The launch of the client management system AIDS Foundation East-West (AFEW)
As World AIDS Day approaches, AIDS Foundation East-West (AFEW) is announcing the launch of the client management system in the Russian Federation. The system is based on a unique methodology that combines local and international experience in working with vulnerable groups, which has already been piloted in Central Asian Republics.
Since spring 2007, AFEW has carried out a great deal of preparatory work aimed at establishing co-operation between governmental services and non-profit organisations, developing methodological materials, and training client managers to work with vulnerable groups.
The goal of this project, which is being implemented in collaboration with the Federal Penal Service, AIDS centres, regional and municipal social welfare agencies, and a number of civil organisations, is to ensure that vulnerable groups have access to vital support – obtaining medical care, restoring documents, etc. – thereby facilitating the resocialisation of members of these groups, their adaptation to life as part of society, and changes in criminal behaviour, including the prevention of recidivism.
In December 2007, the first Social Bureaus will be set up in six Russian regions – the Voronezh, Tver, Irkutsk, Chelyabinsk and Tomsk regions and the Republic of Tatarstan – to work with injecting drug users, prisoners awaiting release, recently released inmates and people living with HIV.
Representatives of vulnerable groups usually have a whole range of medical and social problems, but whenever they try to seek help they run up against major obstacles due to the circumstances in which they find themselves (lack of awareness about existing services, conflicts with the law, extended isolation from society, loss of social contacts). For the same reasons, they are often unable to focus on preserving their own health and changing their behaviour and lifestyle. This increases the risk that they or members of their social network might contract HIV, hepatitis or tuberculosis, or that other situations might arise that will be detrimental to their health and social status.
AFEW is implementing client management activities as part of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) project ‘Scaling-up and improving access to HIV/AIDS prevention and care programmes for injecting drug users and in prison settings in the Russian Federation’ and the GLOBUS Project of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
