Project: Counteracting HIV/AIDS epidemic among drug-users: study visits for penitentiary services’ and non-governmental organisations’ representatives from the Baltic countries (Poland)

Project goals

The project involves the series of study visits, training and apprenticeship sessions, and technical advising sessions intended for representatives of penitentiary institutions and non-governmental organisations working in the field of HIV prevention and drug demand reduction.

The overall objectives of the project include:
Support in desinging and introducing HIV/AIDS prevention programs in the penitentiary system and in the open environment in the target region, where HIV/ AIDS epidemic dynamic is high and the number of drug-addicted young people is constantly growing
Contribute to establishing of cooperation between the governmental (penitentiary services) and non-governmental sectors in the target region
Strengthening of the third sector capacity in the target region
Sharing the Polish experience in the sphere of counteracting drug-use and spread of HIV/AIDS and in cooperation between the different sectors: governmental, non- governmental and private
Increasing awareness of HIV/AIDS and HIV-related problems among the administrative bodies representatives – decision-makers.

The project immediate purposes are:
-Draw attention of penitentiary systems’ administration to problems of drug addiction in prisons
-To help introduce HIV/AIDS prevention programs adjusted to the local conditions,
-To help introduce HIV/AIDS prevention and drug-addiction treatment programs in penitentiary system
-To help introduce prevention and therapeutic methods through training of a core group professional staff who are able to train other staff and volunteers in up-to-date methods and approaches.
