Project: Psychosocial Centre Beslan

Project goals

The overall goal of the programme is to to provide a psycho-social service for the children in Beslan in order to prevent posttraumatic stress symptoms through set-up of the structure in co-operation with the psychological-educational Centre “Doverie” of Vladikavkaz and scientific monitoring and research for the program through exchanges between the Universities of Vladikavkaz and Zurich. Activities include scientific monitoring and evaluation of the psycho-social support service;
contribution to sport and recreation activities with sport equipment and new sport events for children and youth in Beslan and provision of an additional module in the horse riding school near Beslan. The psycho-social sessions as well as the sports activities received steadily increasing numbers of children and youth from Beslan. Over the months of April, May June and July 2005, between 250 and 400 children came to attend on a regular basis sport activities and about one hundred of them participated in the art and playing therapy sessions in the Sports Centre of Beslan. In July and August 2005, two master classes per week were kindly provided by world and Olympic champions in wrestling from North Ossetia in the frame of this sport programme. In July 2005 a new module of horse riding was started in Beslan for a first group of 15 children. During summer holidays in 2005, the children could also attend the summer camps in Tsey, a special programme organized by SDC-HA together with Search and Rescue Service and DOVERIE. Sixty children from Beslan were involved in the programme in July 2005.
