Strengthening maternal and child health in the North Caucasus

Project goals
The overall objective is to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children of early age in the Northern Caucasus by ensuring improved health care services and family and community practices. Specific Objectives include reinforcement of health care providers’ skills and care practices; developmen and promotion of strategies to ensure full continuity of care and consistency of practices throughout the health system including health education institutions; development and promotion of strategies to improve family and community practices in care-seeking behaviour, home management of common diseases and nutrition.
Some of the main activities include implementation of Component 1 – Making Pregnancy Safer (MPS) and Promoting Effective Perinatal Care (PEPC) in NC region, including: MPS/PEPC Orientation meeting for policy makers and key stockholders; Needs assessment in basic equipment and supplies, if necessary; Capacity building through training workshops: MPS training in Evidence Based Mother and Newborn Care;
training of trainers and health workers in Essential Newborn Care and Breastfeeding and in Essential Antenatal, Perinatal and Post-partum care(obstetrical care), Comprehensive Abortion care, HIV prevention mother to child transmission (PMTCT); Training of local supervisors for follow-up, monitoring and impact evaluation; Follow-up, audit, monitoring and impact evaluation; and Component 2 – Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI), including orientation meeting for policy makers; adaptation of IMCI guidelines to the local conditions and needs; training of health workers; training of local supervisors for follow up and monitoring; follow up, monitoring and evaluation. |
