n/a One third of Russians can not afford paid medical service.



33% of the Russians use only free medical service. And these numbers are even higher in Privolzhskii Federal region (41% of the population).


Pensioners have to consult a free service doctors (47%) and young people prefer to have paid medical service. Only 20% of people are satisfied with free medical services.

n/a WHO: Russia is going to lose $ 300 bln due to chronic diseases



A report “Preventing Chronic diseases: a vital investment” informed that 35 out of 58 million of fatal cases will be due to chronic diseases. It will be two times more than deaths due to all infections taken together (including HIV, malaria, tuberculosis).


WHO emphasizes that there is enough knowledge to treat chronic diseases but not enough effort has been taken. Especially, it concerns smoking control (every year 4, 9 million people die due to smoking) and obesity (1 million people have excess of weight).

Ministry of health and social development approved two new lists of medicines at once.


The first list contains medicines for the privileged people and the second one is a list of the OTC medicines.

The first list will be valid starting from 2006. It was changed for the third time and now it includes 83 more international non patent names of the medicines. 60 international non patent names have been excluded.

30/09/2005 New conception of children healthcare system: ministers are for and doctors are against it.



This Thursday, the Government of the Russian Federation has considered a conception of healthcare system for children in Russia till 2010, and plans of measures on its achievement. It is planned to invest R 30 bln in medical equipment.



Leonid Roshal, the most famous pediatrician in the country, has criticized the decision to increase salaries of GP doctors only. He has mentioned that there are a lot of the specialized doctors with low salaries. He has also noted that Russian children health care system cost only 120 dollars per month, whereas this number is 2 thousand dollars for children abroad. He has offered to implement transparent financing of the healthcare system by means of obligatory medical insurance.

29/09/2005 Children health care conception introduced in the Government today



Mihail Zurabov offered to increase salaries of medical personnel up to 30-50 thousand rubles per month (that is 1000-1800 dollars per month) as the only way to attract professors to the industry.

He approved conception on children health care till 2010. He thinks it has specific suggestions, for example, staffing medical personnel. He noted that graduating students prefer higher salaries specialties, and no one wants to be a district doctor.
