Date: 3 December 2007
Place: Worldwide
The International Day of Disabled Persons aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. This year the focus is on ensuring adequate employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
It is estimated that 470 million people of working age have disabilities. Across the world, unemployment rates are much higher among people with disabilities than among the general population.
Many individuals with disabilities can contribute to the world’s workplaces if they are given equal opportunity to develop their skills and secure employment. Negative attitudes and the denial of opportunities are the main reasons for their low participation. The business community has an important role to play in ensuring disabled people are more included the workforce.
